Clearly Speaking
Clearly Speaking

Are you hard to understand because of a foreign accent?

“I really appreciate your thorough analysis of various components of my communication skills in the score card. It is definitely a reference list I can use in my daily communication. The recommendation and resource list is relevant and specific. You are really a good communication doctor.”

-Gabriel A.

“I have learned a lot about English, and now I am capable to talk to people by phone and face to face and to negotiate and reach agreement and closing deals in my daily routine.”

–Juan C.

“You helped me so much. I am more comfortable and confident pronouncing my words, I am speaking more slowly and I get feedback that I am more clear, even when I talk on the phone. I have more knowledge and awareness about my speech and feel that I communicate more effectively even in stressful situations. Thank you so much.”

–Alejandra, Software Engineering Firm

Are you tired of repeating yourself?

Do you wonder if you will be misunderstood every time you open your mouth to say something?

Are your colleagues getting speaking opportunities that you are more qualified to do?

Do people sometimes translate your message for you?

These are the exact complaints I hear from corporate clients who are frustrated that their excellent grasp of the English language is not enough to be understood and they are missing opportunities at work because of it! They are passed up for speaking opportunities. Customers complain and ultimately, they lose their self-confidence.

So, if you are feeling this way, you are not alone!

And here is a secret you should know….Language schools frequently don’t  teach you the intricacies of American English. This is not a criticism of language schools, after all, you know the language well because of one. But more often than not, they do not spend time teaching the high level skills of vowel pronunciation and the melody of English. And most non-native English speakers aren’t sure about what they should be doing differently, in terms of mastering American English.

This is one of the reasons why I got into this profession in the first place. When I was in college I had to take a difficult class, statistics. Not really my area of expertise. It was taught by a non-native English speaker who had a good grasp of English but he was very difficult to understand. This was not good for me because Statistics was hard for me and I couldn’t understand the professor. I squeaked by in this class. But there were many others like me, who didn’t even squeak by. It made me so much more aware of the impact our communication skills have on other people. The power behind speech that you can understand vs speech that you can’t understand makes a BIG difference in people’s lives. If you are hard to understand, you risk not being able to make a difference in people’s lives and you may miss opportunities that could make you shine as a leader.
