Make Your Voice the Best That It Can Be
As business leaders, you use your vocal tone to build credibility, connect with your audiences, display confidence and establish authority. Part of being a great leader is having a voice that people want to listen to, a voice that inspires trust and a voice that can motivate people to action. Below are four strategies that can make your voice the best it can be.
- Breath is the fuel for your voice. The fuel that powers your sound, because our voice is made by outgoing breath. When you breathe using the diaphragm muscle correctly, your voice has a deeper and richer tone. A tone that commands attention and conveys authority.
- Slow down so people don’t tune you out. At the end of television and radio commercials, do you pay attention when the spokesperson runs through the fine print? Most likely, you don’t. Why? Well, you can’t understand what the spokesperson is saying and maybe it even makes you uncomfortable. The same fate awaits business leaders who speak too quickly making their speeches hard to listen to and follow.
- Pauses are a natural oasis. Keep your narrative from becoming a long trek across a featureless desert with pauses. Effective pauses are a great way to let something you just said sink in with your team members, upper management or clients. You want people to linger not only on your content, but on your credibility, confidence and leadership.
- Words don’t always matter. How you sound is more important that what you say. The pitch, pace, tone, melody, and volume determine whether or not anyone believes a single word that you say. In business, you only have a few moments to convey that “likeability factor” through the sound of your voice.
